Safari Overview

This 18 day Gorillas and Wildlife Safari  will take you to the Murchison Falls National Park for wildlife viewing through game drives and boat launches, to Kibale Forest National Park the primate capital of the world, for a chimpanzee tracking and to see various species of monkeys and birds. And crown the safari with a visit to Queen Elizabeth for more wildlife viewing. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable forest. Relax at Lake Bunyonyi and also have a guided walk safari in Lake Mburo.

Day 1: Drive to Murchison Falls National park

After your breakfast, we drive through the famous Luwero Triangle. You visit and track white rhinos at Ziwa rhino sanctuary.

This sanctuary has now been established to breed black and white rhinos, and restore rhino populations in Uganda’s’ protected areas in a later stage. This makes it the best for Gorillas and Wildlife Safari. You will retire for dinner and overnight. This marks day one of your Gorillas and Wildlife Safari   in Uganda.

Day 2: Murchison Falls National Park

After breakfast head to the delta in search for bird life and enjoy the game drive to look for lions, giraffes, herds of elephants, buffaloes and many more. We will then go for an afternoon boat cruise to Murchison falls.

This boat trip along the Nile is often cited as being the height of a trip to Murchison since it allows you to get up close and personal with the animals. Along this stretch of the river, there are reported to be around 4000 hippos in the addition to some enormous Nile crocodiles.

The bird life is stunning with brightly colored kingfishers and bee-eaters darting along the riverbanks. If lucky you may see the rare and prehistoric looking shoebills, which is a cross between the dodo and a dinosaur.

The boat takes you to the base of the falls which only adds to their impressiveness. Finally you will be stopping at the top of the falls which is a fantastic sight. You will retire for dinner and overnight. This marks our Day 2 of the 18 Day Gorillas and Wildlife Safari.

Day 3: Another Boat trip along the Nile

After breakfast, you will relax at your lodge and in the afternoon you will go for a boat cruise along the Nile. Expect to sight a lot of hippos cooling off in the water, buffalos and elephants drinking from the Nile, warthogs, waterbucks, kobs, Shoebilled Stork and other animals eating fresh grass along the banks and drinking from the Nile.

The banks are immersed with birds such as cormorants, red-throated bee-eaters, cattle egrets, skimmers, and African fish eagles. The boat takes you to the base of the falls which only adds to their impressiveness. Finally you will be stopping at the top of the falls which is a fantastic sight. You will retire for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Murchison Falls National Park- Hoima

Morning at leisure at the lodge. In the afternoon, you will proceed to Hoima, travelling on both asphalt and unpaved roads, you pass through tradional Ugandan villages where you see people at work tending their traditional crops of millet, sorghum, beans and maize.

The lush rolling of this region provide good “photo opportunities”. In Hoima you will visit the karuzika palace the official residence of the king of Bunyoro and get to know the origin of the Bunyoro kingdom. Visit mparo tombs which are a royal burial ground for the kings of bunyoro kingdom. You will retire for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Drive to Kibale National Park

On the 5th day of Gorillas and Wildlife Safari, after breakfast, we will transfer to fort portal town. We shall have several stopovers for sightseeing and also take photos of tea plantations.

Lunch at the hotel and we shall have a brief visit to the Amabere Ga nyina Mwiiru caves and the falls in canon Apollo before climbing on Nyakasura hills where you will have a magnificent view of Saaka crater lakes.

You arrive at Fort Portal, then continue towards Kibale forest, one of the great African rainforest research reserves. Years of study by scientist (who have cut a grid through the forest) have habituated many of its animals to human observers. This forest is famed for the variety of primates found here and it is a terrific area for birds. You will retire for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Chimpanzee plus other primates

Half day search of chimpanzee and 10 other primates including phoestes, red colobus, blues and red tailed and grey cheeked Mangabey. The guide will provide detailed explanations, not only on primates, but also on all the forest fauna and flora and will ensure that your walk is both informative and enjoyable.

This walk is excellent for viewing bird life and seeing primates at close quarters. You will retire for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Chimpanzee Habituation

Today we’ll accompany Kibale’s researchers in a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to contribute to a “soft” habituation project with chimpanzees. You’ll learn to safely observe the chimps during their daily activities, so they get comfortable with human presence without changing their natural behaviors.

You will be able to experience the chimp families as they wake up, hunt, patrol, play, fight, copulate, and breastfeed. Guided by biologists and researchers, we will enjoy unprecedented intimate access to these wild chimps for the entire day until they build their nests at bed time. Kibale Forest hosts at least 1,500 chimpanzees out of the 4,950 found in Uganda, making this the largest concentration of chimps in Africa.

The park is also home to 10 other primates including diurnal species like the Red Colobus Monkey, Blue Monkey, Red-tailed monkey, Gray Checked Mangabeys, and Vervet Monkey, as well as many other animals.

Day 8: Queen Elizabeth National Park, Viewing Rwenzori, lots of Crater Lakes and Wild animals

Breakfast and then drive to queen Elizabeth. The game seen will depend on the season: the kasenyi plains are good for loin and mweya peninsula for a variety of animals. Shift to Queen Elizabeth this morning (about 3 hrs driving) leaving through fort portal town.

You turn south and early this afternoon enter Queen Elizabeth, which is dominated on its northern border by the snow-capped 16000-foot Rwenzori Mountains-the famed “mountains of the moon”. This 767-square-mile conservation area is bordered on the north east by Lake George and on the southwest by Lake Edward: its western border adjoins the Zaire parc du virunga.

You will expect to see teeming herds of impala-like Uganda kob as well as topi, elephant and loin, giant forest hog, Cape buffalo. There are also several soda lakes filling ancient volcanic calderas where flamingos reside seasonally. In the afternoon enjoy a game drive in the northern part of the park. You will retire for dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Game drive to see lions, Leopards, Elephants, Buffalo

We set out early in the morning for a game drive in the northern part of the park on the kasenyi, track in search of loins, elephants, and solitary buffaloes. This is the best time for opportunities of viewing the cats in action owing to the vast population of Uganda kobs. We have an excellent chance to view just about every animal here at very close range. Return to the lodge for your breakfast, before heading out for a launch trip along the kazinga channel. This gives you the opportunity to view wildlife up close: hippos’ huff and spray at a mere feet away from the boat, buffalo linger in the shallows. The shores of the channel are also home to an array of birds including pink backed pelicans, pied and malachite kingfishers, saddle billed stork and many others. You will retire for dinner and overnight.

Day 10: Tree Climbing Lions, Queen Elizabeth National Park

After breakfast we drive through south through sunning savannah grasslands as we head to the southern sector of the park –Ishasha, a remote and beautiful extension of queen Elizabeth NP that is host to a large variety wildlife (this is a fabulous area in which to see the lions draped from the trees and nowhere in Africa do you stand a better chance of seeing this in the large low limbed fig tree of ishasha). We will visit the Uganda kob mating ground which is a defined area specifically used by kobs for challenging, enticing and mating adult rams defend a circle territory (30meters diameter)and depending on the season the mating ground can have 20 and more of these small. You will retire for dinner and overnight.

Day 11: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

After breakfast, we shall drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Where you have a chance to do another more game drive in the park before the scenic one-hour drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. You will retire for dinner and overnight.

Day 12: Gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Today enjoy gorilla tracking in Bwindi. After breakfast, proceed for the morning briefing before the highlighting of the trip. Gorilla trekking, which may last the entire day. We trek the gorillas through the rainforest and bamboo covered slopes, accompanied by a guide and trackers, in search of a mountain gorilla family, the walking can sometimes be tough and long, but when you catch a glimpse of the magnificent silverback, any discomforts will be quickly forgotten when the gorillas are sighted, visitors will be guided to within 6 meters from the gorillas, sit around them for a whole hour while gazing into their big round eyes.

Gorilla trekking is unpredictable. It’s difficult to foresee how many hours you will hike. The gorilla excursion can take from 2 up 8 hours. Expect to walk along distance in steep and muddy conditions, sometimes with rain overhead, before you encounter any gorillas. You will retire for dinner and overnight.

Day 13: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

After having breakfast, we shall take a scenic drive taking you through the beautiful terrain of the rolling hills with terraced landscape. A short drive to the beautiful lake Bunyonyi where we can relax and enjoy some reflection time with its fresh water, bilharzias-free and beautiful landscapes. Lake Bunyonyi is a small paradise for travelers. You will retire for dinner and overnight.

Day 14: Canoe trekking on Lake Bunyonyi -Uganda

After breakfast, set out for a 5- hour canoe trek as well as bird watching on the beautiful lake bunyonyi traversing to the Gorgeos Kyabahinga Peninsula. Here you will be gladly welcomed with songs plus dances by the resident school children. You will enjoy with the locals at least a cup of “Obushera”which is a local brew yes will ascend the Kyabahinga slops having a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the birdlife and the verdant terrain. The view is very break taking! The guide will certainly brief you about the history of the area. Among the bird species you will see the dusky Tutle dove, the handsome francolin and alpine chat. A renown herbalist who is a traditional healer-omugurusi Jeremiah, based on the hill top will disclose to you some of the secretes about the flora on the tropical highland.

Day 15: Drive to Lake Mburo National Park

We drive to Mbarara now one of Uganda’s major towns, but formerly capital of Ankole kingdom for over 400years until disbanded by independence in 1962. In the days before modern Uganda came into being, the area had a series of fiercely independent tribal stats. From here you continue to Lake Mburo, a small but picturesque national park renowned for its herds of antelope and one of the only two Ugandan parks home to bushel’s zebra. The park is also especially good for acacia associated bird.

Day 16: Morning game drive and boat cruise

You will after breakfast go for a morning game drive where  you will see buffalo zebra, impala and topi and with a bit of luck may be even asitatunga, an antelope rarely seen living in the papyrus swamps and many animal species. In the afternoon, you will go on a boat trip on the lake to see a variety of animals such as hippos and crocodiles and bird species such as Pelicans, Black Crake, Heron, Cormorant and Fish Eagle which can only be viewed clearly on a boat trip. You will retire to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 17: Safari in Lake Mburo National Park for zebras, eland, hippos, buffalos, topi, birds etc

Rise early for breakfast before a short drive to the Rwonyo park headquarters. This has often been a good chance of seeing hyenas coming back to the water you will see buffalo zebra, impala and topi and with a bit of luck may be even asitatunga, an antelope rarely seen living in the papyrus swamps. After your early morning activities, return the lodge for a late breakfast on the wooden decking overlooking the water hole. Before lunch you relax at the pool the bar area or enjoy the privacy of your room. In the afternoon you can go on game drive to kazuma look-out point with a stunning view on to 9 of the lakes surrounding this park. On your way you will see most of the animal species occurring in Lake Mburo national park. The walk onto kazuma look-out point is steep but short and extremely rewording and should not be missed when visiting this park.

Day 18: Return to Entebbe

On the last day of Gorillas and Wildlife Safari , we shall have morning at leisure before checking out of the lodge heading east from lake Mburo, we bid farewell to the parks friendly staff as we depart for Kampala. We drive through a magnificent hilly country and lush cultivation on an approximately four-hour journey en route we will stop at the equator for photographs and polar-water experiment then a local community popular for making local drums (mpabire village) gardens crafts shops and fruit markets. We will be in Entebbe in the evening before for your flight back home.
