The Mikeno Lodge, Bukima Tent Camp, and Tchegera Camp are amazing camps that are luxuriously equipped to meet all your needs and wishes. The barracks on top of the Nyiragongo Volcano, on the other hand, are very basic and adventurous, but that’s what you can expect from a camp that is built 3570 m above sea level on the slopes of an active volcano.
You will leave at around 11h00 on your hike to the top of the Nyiragongo and you will arrive at about 17h00. It takes about 6 to 7 hours to reach the top, depending on breaks between the hikes and the overall tempo of the group.
We will provide you with all the necessary equipment for the hike. Because the wooden barracks on top only have a tent with a comfortable mattress, you will also receive a backpack with lots of water, some food, a poncho for when it rains, and a warm sleeping bag.
During the hike, you will be helped by a porter, every person will get a porter who helps with carrying the bag. You will also be joined by a chef who will cook a nice warm soup and dinner for you on top of the Nyiragongo! He also makes coffee and breakfast for you over a little campfire at 3470 m height during the next morning. The barracks might not have the luxury of the other camps, but the service sure does!
