Where to do Sport Fishing in Uganda

Sport Fishing trips and safaris in Uganda are a lifetime experience that allows visitors to explore the country’s fishing spots, especially Lake Victoria including numerous Ssese Islands, and River Nile which are all situated within Jinja; Murchison Falls National Park and Lake Mburo National Park. The fishing techniques used during this adventure are modern to ensure safety and promote sustainable fishing practices.

Murchison falls national park

Fishing Safari in Murchison falls involves the use of live baits and casting lures and visitors have a higher opportunity to catch amazing fish species like the Nile perch and catfish as well as tiger fish. Therefore anglers need to come with three meters or 2.4 meter rods with a mounted spool or multiplier fishing reel, seven spinning rods with 3/5 kilogram line for catching small fish species and for catfish and the Nile perch, you can use any fixed spool or multiplier with 30 to 35Ib line. You will need a sport fishing permit to allow you to partake in this most exhilarating adventure in Murchison falls national park which will also offer you the opportunity to catch at least a 108 kilogram Nile perch.

The site is reachable using a boat or by simply walking down the gorge to the River from the top of the falls. The terrain is steep as you hike and this means you need some physical fitness.

Lake Victoria

Sport fishing on Lake Victoria is an all-year-round adventure but October to March is considered the best period for fishing tours. Travelling during this season offers anglers the opportunity to at least cat a Nile perch of about 10 kilograms to 80 kilograms. The major fishing techniques used in Lake Victoria include trolling with the lure. As well, there are chances of catching the Tilapia of about one to two kilograms using fly fishing methods. Anglers can therefore set off for fishing Safari on Lake Victoria with an 18 feet boat with a single foam-filled hull which is managed by a Yamaha 140HP that takes about four people or simply take up a canoe or 24 ft fibreglass.

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo is one of the best spots in Uganda for fishing safaris. It is situated within the stunning Lake Mburo National Park, western Uganda and consists of 6 distinct fish species that are all thriving in its water including the tilapia. FISHING in Lake Mburo is best conducted around Mazinga. You can come with your gear and don’t forget to get a fishing permit that is issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority. Sport fishing permits in Lake Mburo National Park cost $15

Mount Elgon and the Sipi falls area

Sport fishing is such an exhilarating adventure that you shouldn’t miss out on in life. Mount Elgon, is conducted within the three Sipi waterfalls that are found near the national park. A safari to this site is an opportunity for anglers to challenge themselves with the rainbow fish species together with its striking colours and fighting skills. It weighs about three kilograms. For anglers who are interested in sport fishing in Sipi falls and Mount Elgon, permits can be obtained at Sipi River Lodge but don’t forget to carry your gear.

Spot fishing equipment

For the Nile perch and other various catfish, spot fishing is done using casting lures, the rod should be 11 feet which is 3 meters, and 8 feet which are 2.4 meters. This is used together with a fixed spool or multiplier real depending on the preferred skills of a traveller.

At the same time, travellers can bring themselves their equipment which is recommended for spot fishing or else these will give to a traveller at a fee but normally if damaged or spelt, the traveller has to pay according to the rules and regulations of sport fishing safari as you will brief by the guide.

The charge for the visa on arrival is US$50 in cash while the charge for processing the E-visa application yourself via the correct Uganda government website (http://evisa.go.ke/evisa.html) is US$52.53 including the credit card fee.

Single Entry Visa is allowed to Indian travellers who wish to stay in Uganda for a short period. … Indians who travel to Uganda for tourism purposes or business purposes or medical purposes. The applicant needs to mention the purpose of his visit. Uganda tourist visas and Uganda work visas are single-entry visas.

The official processing duration for a Ugandan visa as per the official Ugandan Consulates’ site is 14 business days. However, this duration does vary between 2 and 15 days depending on the Embassy to be contacted.

The Best Time To Visit Uganda is pretty much all year round. The country straddles the equator so there are no particular seasons, even though March to May and October to November are wetter – which can be less pleasant for gorilla tracking. Wildlife can be seen in Uganda National Parks throughout the year, while gorilla permits are often heavily discounted in the rainier months.

Although it’s regarded as a year-round activity, the Best Time To Visit Uganda for gorilla trekking is during the country’s two dry seasons: January and February and from June to September.

Game viewing in Uganda’s savannah parks is best at the end of the dry seasons – February and March and September/early October – when wildlife is concentrated around water sources. Birding Safaris Uganda is fantastic all year round but is at its peak between November and April when migrant species are present. We’d recommend avoiding Uganda Safaris entirely during the heavy rains of April and May.

The average Temperatures of Uganda are 21.5 C and 71 F, these also drop at night time to around 54 F which affects the altitude. Rainfall in Uganda ranges between 1000-2000mm every year. Be that as it may, during the time the skies in Uganda are clear which underpins most safari excursions. These climate changes have brought about changes in climate patterns hence making it harder to predict the seasons of the tourism year.

The Rainy Season

March, April & May and September, October & November

There are two rainy seasons in Uganda—March through May is the long rains with heavy downpours that are no fun for a Safari In Uganda. The months of September, October & November see short rains that show off the emerald plains dotted with the most impressive wildlife.

The rainy season does not mean that it rains throughout the day hampering human activity. A heavy downpour or thunderstorm may last for an average of 3 hours and the rest of the day remain winter-like but during the short rains, the sun may show up and heat the moment in just a few minutes changing every living thing’s mood. And you should note that a downpour can stick to a regular pattern once the season starts, for example, stick to rain late in the night or during particular hours of the day throughout the season.

The Dry Season (Best time)

June, July & August and December, January & February

There’s plentiful sunshine in drier months from June to August and December to February and these are considered the best time for viewing wildlife in Uganda. During these months there’s little or no downpour, especially in the northern region of Kidepo Valley and Murchison Falls National Parks.

In the south where the gorilla trekking activity takes place, trails are dry and not slippery therefore making this the most preferred time for a gorilla trek or chimpanzee tracking experience. Wildlife is easier to spot as animals gather around water points and there is also little undergrowth for the animals to hide. You will also have enough time for bird-watching.
