The Rwanda and Uganda Gorilla Trek will end in Kigali with visit to genocide memorial sites in Kigali.

Detailed  Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali City Tour & transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival in Rwanda you will start this Safari by touring the city of Kigali during which you will visit the Genocide memorial sites where more than one million people lost their lives during the genocide of the mid 1990s in Rwanda.

You will later transfer to Volcanoes National and check in at the Hotel booked for you in Ruhengeri town adjacent to the park.

Day 2: Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes

You will have an early breakfast and after which you will be driven to the Park headquarters for briefing at 8:30am about the rules on Gorilla tracking. You will be allocated a Gorilla family to track and the guides to lead you to the Gorillas.

The tracking experience will be a 2-5 hour experience after which you will be returned to the lodge for lunch. You will later in the afternoon be taken on a nature walk after which you will retire to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Hike Dian Fossey in Volcanoes

You will have an early Rwanda and Uganda Gorilla Trek breakfast and hike up to the Karisoke Research Centre that features an exhibit of interpretive panels about mountain gorillas and the conservation efforts that Dian Fossey pioneered. It also shelters the Dian Fossey artefacts, a 3D interactive model of the Virunga Mountains and casts of real gorilla nose prints.

Overall, the centre adds a perfect learning opportunity to the facts that people barely know about Mountain Gorillas. You will return to the lodge for lunch and later go out to visit the Iby’iwachu cultural village for a Kinyarwanda cultural gala.

You will return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Golden Monkey tracking in Volcanoes & transfer to Bwindi

You will have breakfast and move to the Park head quarters for a briefing on the Golden monkey tracking rules before going out to track them in the forest. The trek takes 1– 4 hours and you have one hour to stay with the Golden monkeys once sighted.

You will later cross over to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park in Uganda. Dinner and overnight will be at the lodge of your booking.

Day 5: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi & transfer to Kigali

You will have an early breakfast and be driven to the Park Headquarters for a briefing on the rues of Gorilla trekking. After the briefing, you will set out to find the Gorillas. Trekking Gorillas in Bwindi is quite challenging as it involves moving over rugged terrain of steep slopes and valleys. The jungle is very lively with rich forest sounds.

The trek ranges between 2 – 8 hours and you have one hour to stay with the Gorillas once sited. In the evening you will transfer to Kigali about 4 hours’ drive from Bwindi.

This part of the Rwanda and Uganda Gorilla Trek journey is quite charming with scenic views of Kigezi highlands, Virunga Volcanoes and hills of Rwanda.
