Overview

This 9 Days Uganda and Rwanda Tour takes you to the cultural and heritage sites in Kampala, Big Game Savannah Wildlife in both Lake Mburo and Queen Elizabeth National Parks for game drives and boat launches and to lake Bunyonyi for scenic holiday and boat ride. The safari extends to Rwanda for a second alternative trek of the Mountain Gorillas and to Lake Kivu for a boat cruise. The safari crowns with a visit to the memorial sites in Kigali.

Detailed Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Uganda

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport you will be met by your Uganda and Rwanda Tour guide who will transfer you to Kampala to a hotel booked for you. He will brief you about the safari arrangements and leave you to rest and re-energize till the following day.

Day 2: Kampala City Tour

You will have breakfast and set out to visit the various cultural – heritage sites in the city of Kampala that will include the Kasubi Tombs, the Namugongo Martyr’s shrine, the Uganda such and Makerere University.

Dinner and overnight will be at the hotel of your booking.

Day 3: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park

You will have an early breakfast and head west of Kampala to Lake Mburo National Park. You will have a stopover at the Equator for photos at this international landmark where you will also watch the mesmerizing water experiments conducted at the spot where the two hemispheres divide.

You will continue the Uganda and Rwanda Tour drive through the rolling hills and plains dotted with community homesteads and herds of the long horned Ankole cattle to Lake Mburo National Park. You will arrive in time for an afternoon boat ride and later retire for dinner and overnight at your booked lodge.

Day 3: Game drive in Mburo and transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

You will wake up early and set off for a morning game drive to enjoy the rich biodiversity of this small park that boasts of the large herds of zebra, impala, gigantic eland, topis and a variety of bird species.

You will return to the lodge for a late breakfast and hit the road again to Queen Elizabeth National Park, arriving in the evening. Dinner and overnight will be at the lodge of your booking.

Day 4: Game drive and boat cruise in Queen Elizabeth National Park

After your morning Uganda and Rwanda Tour breakfast, you will have an early morning Game drive where you will see the lion, leopard, giant forest hog, Cape buffalo, elephant, defassa waterbuck, Uganda Kob, topi and bushbuck among others. You will return to your lodge for lunch and in the afternoon go for a 2-hour boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel.

This is a 42kms channel that joins Lake Edward and Lake George. This trip passes through possibly the highest concentration of hippos and offers an excellent platform for photography, bird watching and game viewing.

The prolific bird life is colorful, with well over 550 resident species.

Dinner and overnight will be spent at your reserved lodge.

Day 5: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

You will after your breakfast head south and travel to Lake Bunyonyi.  The Uganda and Rwanda Tour journey takes 6-7 hours and you will have your lunch enroute. The landscape around the lake is made up of terraced hills protruding from the water’s edge. Bunyonyi means “place of little birds” and as the name suggests, there is plenty of birdlife around the lake.

You will in the afternoon choose either to go for a canoe ride, swim on the lake or hike to the view point on the hills to see the exceedingly beautiful scenery of this part of the country.

Dinner and overnight will be at the lodge booked for you near the lake.

This lake is said to be one of the most beautiful places in western Uganda. It is the second deepest lake in Africa [900 meters deep] and also one of the few places in the country where it is considered safe to swim as it is bilharzias free.

Day 6: Transfer to Rwanda

You will have breakfast and transfer to Rwanda. The drive will be through a beautiful part of the country often referred to as ‘the Switzerland of Africa’ because of its unique Mediterranean weather.

You will see a great country-side, bamboo forests and have great views of the Virunga Mountains. You will cross the national border at Gatuna and drive to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.

On arrival, you will have a short tour of Ruhengeri town before driving to your Uganda and Rwanda Tour lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park

You will have an early breakfast and move to the Park headquarters where you will receive a briefing on the rules of gorilla trekking and be allocated the gorilla group you will trek. You will, after the briefing, head into the forest with the ranger guides to search for the gorillas in the Volcano Virunga Hills.  Upon finding them you will spend a maximum of one hour observing the gorillas in their natural setting.

You will return to your lodge for lunch and later visit the twin lakes of Ruhondo and Burera in the evening for a cultural experience after which you will return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Transfer to Kibuye on Lake Kivu

You will after breakfast drive to Kibuye town which is found on the Eastern Shores of the beautiful Lake Kivu where you will have lunch.  Later in the afternoon you will take a boat ride on Lake Kivu to discover the Island of ‘Napoleon’s Hat’ and continue the ride to Gisenyi town On this boat ride you will get a chance to enjoy the breathtaking views of Congo’s Nyiragongo Volcano. Dinner and overnight will be at the hotel of your booking.

Day 9: Transfer back to Kigali and departure

You will have your breakfast and travel back to Kigali. Depending on the time of your departure flight you may have a brief Kigali City excursion to visit the Genocide memorial sites and the colorful markets for souvenirs before transferring to the Airport for your departure flight.
