You will also trek Golden monkeys, interact with the amazing former forest people (the Batwa) and have an opportunity to visit the Genocide memorial sites in Kigali and pay homage to the over one million victims.

Detailed Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali City Tour & transfer to Bwindi

Upon arrival in Rwanda, you will start this Trek Gorillas in Rwanda & Uganda Safari by touring the city of Kigali during which you will visit the Genocide memorial sites where more than one million people lost their lives during the genocide of the mid 1990s in Rwanda.

You will later drive to Bwindi Forest Impenetrable Forest in Uganda.

Dinner and overnight will be at the lodge of your booking.

Day 2: Gorilla tracking in Bwindi & Batwa Cultural tour

After an early breakfast, you will be taken to the briefing point where you will join fellow trekkers for a briefing on the rules to be followed during the trek through the thick jungle to the Gorillas and how to conduct yourself when you are in their presence. Your trek will be an exciting journey along forested slopes, entwined vines, bushes and bamboo before you eventually reach the Gorillas.

En route, your guide will point out signs of previous Gorilla activity, including dung, nests and chewed bamboo shoots. The time taken to track the Gorillas can take as little as 2 hours to as much as 8 hours! Once the Gorillas have been located, your group will be allowed a maximum of one hour with them. This is a fantastic and privileged opportunity to get up close and personal with the Gorillas.

You will return to your lodge for a rest and later go for a community walk among the Batwa people who used to live in the Bwindi forest before it was gazetted as a National Park. You will learn about their life and culture as a forest people and be amazed by the wealth of knowledge they have on native medicinal plants; hunting and gathering; trapping animals, and predicting the weather.

You will retire to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Golden Monkey trekking in Mgahinga & transfer to Volcanoes

You will have breakfast and move to the Park headquarters for a briefing on the Golden monkey tracking rules before going out to track them in the forest. The trek takes 1– 4 hours and you have one hour to stay with the Golden monkeys once sighted. The Trek Gorillas in Rwanda & Uganda Safari travellers will later cross over to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Dinner and overnight will be at the lodge of your booking.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

You will have an early breakfast and assemble at the Kinigi Park Headquarters at 08:00 am for a briefing by the park rangers about the conduct of gorilla trekking activity.

You will set off following the set trails to the lush volcanic forest full of birds, abundant flora, and fauna including golden monkeys, elusive elephants and buffaloes and scenic sights of the volcanic peaks seen through the forest gaps. The trek involves great hiking through the varying terrain which makes it an attraction in itself.

You will spend one hour with the Gorillas after which you will return to the lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon you will be taken for an excursion to the compellingly beautiful twin lakes of Bulera and Ruhondo after which you will retire to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Hike Dian Fossey / Bisoke Volcanoes & Transfer to Kigali

You will have a Trek Gorillas in Rwanda & Uganda breakfast and hike up to the Karisoke Research Centre which features an exhibit of interpretive panels about mountain gorillas and the conservation efforts that Dian Fossey pioneered. It also shelters the Dian Fossey artefacts, a 3D interactive model of the Virunga Mountains and casts of real gorilla nose prints. Overall, the centre adds a perfect learning opportunity to the facts that people barely know about Mountain Gorillas.

You will later transfer to Kigali for your departure flight.
